Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Melbourne today to take part in the third India-Australia Annual Leaders’ Summit. Over the three-day visit, bilateral discussions could explore complimentary interests such as defense, trade, energy and Indo-pacific strategy between the two Quad nations.
With recent ABS figures showing that Indians now make up the largest diaspora in Australia, it comes as no surprise that Modi’s visit will be met with a lot of fanfare. He will be hosted at a community event at a sold out Marvel Stadium. Amidst this, many critics and organizations like Amnesty International have been vocal about India’s recent human rights track record, as well.
The Wire’s Shaun Dourado spoke with Dr. Teesta Prakash, a research fellow at the Australia India Institute at the University of Melbourne. They discussed the key developments that could arise. He starts by asking her how significant this visit is when compared to the previous ones?
